year old woman entered therapy in 1880 shortly after falling ill. During the following months she developed severe hysterical symptoms that today might be diagnosed as schizophrenia: frightening hallucinations of black snakes, near-total physical paralysis of arms and legs, and major disturbances of speech and sight.
