After Hitler came to power, Klemperer began to document the regime’s tyranny in his extensive diary. The Nazis forced him out of his university position in 1935. The fact that he was married to a non-Jew allowed him to survive, in miserable conditions, much longer than would otherwise have been possible; but early in 1945 he was selected for deportation, which meant death. However, the Allied bombing raid on Dresden in February facilitated his escape.
