I have spent a very significant portion of my adult life immersed in that tough and tender dialogue known as psychotherapy, first as a patient and then as a therapist (and at times as a patient once more). Again and again I have felt that at last I really knew what I was doing. And again and again I have returned to the feeling that I don’t know what the hell it is all about. And then there are times when I feel that I do know something and that if I will only trust my feelings, then there is much that I do not need to understand, at least not in a way that requires that I be able to explain it all. Those are the best times. At some points along the way, I have, several times, set out to write what I took to be distinctly separate books describing first, the person of the therapist, and next of the patient, and then the process of psychotherapy. But I find that an inner unity has emerged that relates each work to the others.
