In keeping with the rapid development of highspeed automatic computers and their widespread use, there is considerable emphasis on numerical methods, although this is not, strictly speaking, a book on numerical analysis. There is also a considerable body of material not numerical in nature. The ultimate responsibility for the choice of material lies with the author, but acknowledgment is due Professor N. J. Hoff, the editor of the series, for his helpful advice in the selection of the topics included. Chapter 1 covers the subject of interpolation and the finite difference calculus.

Although difference methods are not as widely used with modern high-speed computers as they were when most calculations were done by hand or with a desk calculator, the material of Chapter 1 is important because it provides the tools for deriving in Chapter 2 the formulas of numerical integration and differentiation. These formulas are useful in themselves and are also used extensively in the later chapters as a basis for various numerical methods of solution of differential equations. Because the engineer frequently encounters the problem of solving equations of various types, Chapter 3 describes some of the more useful methods for solving equations.

Many problems in engineering lead to systems of simultaneous linear equations, and so the engineer needs an acquaintance with matrix theory in order to deal with such problems. Chapter 4 provides an introduction to matrix theory and describes several useful methods of solving systems of simultaneous linear equations, inverting matrices, and finding characteristic values and vectors. In all cases the emphasis is on methods suitable for high-speed automatic computers. Chapter 5 begins with some commonly used analytical methods of
solving ordinary differential equations and concludes with a number of useful numerical methods for obtaining such solutions.

Chapter 6 gives a brief treatment of Fourier series with applications to the solution of a variety of problems. Chapter 7 gives an introduction to the use of finitedifference methods that are widely used in the solution of partial differential equations.
