Although I did not write this book with the history of psychoanalysis in mind, the historical perspective has informed my understanding of compulsive drug use, just as the study of compulsive drug use has informed my understanding of the history of psychoanalysis. These two viewpoints are really indispensable to one another, and together, paint a picture of psychoanalysis as it has developed over the years. It is my hope that the reader will derive a taste of the theoretical complexity spawned by Freud’s seminal insights on compulsive drug use.
