His father was a historian who specialized in medieval literature, and his mother was a dynamic, intelligent, and religious woman. Piaget showed an early interest in nature; he enjoyed observing birds, fish, and animals in their natural habitat. At school, too, his leanings were toward the biological sciences. But his was no ordinary schoolboy enthusiasm: when he was only 10 years old, a natural history magazine published his first article, describing an albino sparrow seen in the park. Soon he was able to help the director of the natural history museum of Neuchatel, where his task was to assist in the classification of the museum’s zoology collection.
