In 2009, the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, inaugurated what some hope will be an annual tradition. She established a vegetable garden on the White House lawn. Recognizing the importance of how food is produced in general and the importance of agriculture explicitly, the gesture was appreciated by a broad range of people, and she was roundly applauded for the effort.

In the eyes of some, however, she committed a sin. She said the “O-word”—organic. Almost immediately, she received an e-mail from the Mid America CropLife Association, representing the industrial agricultural system, encouraging her to use “crop protection products,” which, of course, is a nice way of saying pesticides. The symbolism of a popular First Lady “going organic” was viewed as a challenge to the industrial agricultural system.

Although the White House vegetable garden attracts deserved attention, the issue is not a new one. The industrial agricultural system, maturing only since World War II, has spawned a host of problems—ecological, medical, social, political, and economic. In response, there have been calls to reevaluate the way in which food and fiber are produced and consumed in the world. Many of these calls are political. Many are also economic, cultural, health related, or moral/ethical.

A key element in all of these calls, however, is the need for an approach that considers ecology, acknowledging that the agroecosystem is foremost an ecosystem that needs to be managed as such. The movement toward a more ecological and sustainable agriculture may have many names (e.g., organic, agroecological, sustainable, or low input), but it aims at a central core—the fundamental natural laws of ecosystems are involved and need to be taken into account in the design and operation of the agroecosystem. This book is about those laws.
