The role of numerical simulation in the study of such flows has increased tremendously over the past 15 years, and the phenomena and numerical difficulties in complex flows, e.g., instabilities, boundary layers, and singularities, have led to new and challenging mathematical questions. The monograph begins with an introduction to phenomena observed in viscoelastic flows (Chapter 1), the formulation of mathematical equations to model such flows (Chapter 2), and the behavior of various models in simple flows (Chapter 3).

We then review results on basic existence questions (Chapter 4). Chapter 5 provides a brief introduction to some of the issues arising in numerical simulation. Chapter 6 discusses the asymptotics of the high Weisscnberg limit, and Chapter 7 uses these asymptotic ideas to study the behavior near reentrant corners, which arise, for instance, in contraction flows. Chapter 8 discusses the analysis of flow instabilities. In Chapter 9, we discuss change of type in the equations of viscoelastic flow and applications to melt fracture and delayed die swell. Chapter 10 is concerned with jets and filaments and their breakup.
